Fiscal Information System (FIS) - Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the Fiscal Information System (FIS)?

A. The Fiscal Information System (FIS) is a secure web based application that allows a consumer of fiscal and HR reports a tool to run their own real time inquiries with a broad range of selectable criteria.

Q. Was FIS developed by the Department of Administration?

A. No. The FIS is designed, maintained, and supported from Minnesota Management & Budget (MMB) and runs on dedicated hardware owned by MMB.

Q. Is FIS a separate system from MAPS or the IA Data Warehouse?

A. Yes and No. FIS, the application, is not part of the MAPS system or IA Data Warehouse system, however the data that FIS uses to generate reports is pulled out of the IA Data Warehouse. The warehouse contains all transactions done in MAPS as well as other systems.

Q. Is there a glossary or a list of definitions for FIS?

A. No. There is no list of definitions currently for FIS. However, you should be able to find definitions to items you see in FIS reports by searching the following metadata file: metadata descriptions

Q. Can I request a change to the functionality of FIS?

A. Yes. you can email any functionality requests to Jenny Liao, and she will work with MMB to determine if the request is feasible.

Q. How can I gain access to FIS?

A. To gain access to FIS you must have your division director's approval. To request access email Jenny Liao, or complete and submit the FIS Security Form. Instructions for completing the form are at the bottom of the form page.

Q. How can I get training for FIS?

A. If you are a new user to FIS, you can request training by contacting John Kunz. If you are a current user of FIS you can review the FIS Overview document. There is also a tutorial in FIS that can also assist a user.

Q. FIS is not functioning properly or I'm having trouble with using FIS, what can I do?

A. You can email Jenny Liao, and she will assist you with any problems you may be experiencing.
